Easy Peasy isn't difficult (rant)
We love What Lee has put together, we often alter it around a bit but that's why she put it up the way she did. That being said I find many of the comments on the support group odd. I know all kids are different and learn at different times but forgive me some still strike me odd.
This is my normal: We started EP when my daughter was 6 she had finished the first grade curriculum I put together about the pilgrims and 1st grade abeka science. Reading was just fun stuff but usually step into reading 4 or other easy reader chapter books. So after looking through we put her in Level 2 which was a bit easy but she still learned a bit and really enjoyed it. We left for a year or so because level 3 was almost complete review of 1st grade for her and I didn't care for the book options instead she read black beauty, princess and the goblin and the jungle book. Good year, she didn't even consider most of her studies to be 'school' work.
Now my 5 year old is nowhere near where her sister was at that age but still she's doing basic reading, starfall books and basic phonics books. Then we've started Geating ready 2 and incorporated 1st grade math though ep which is total review because she was already adding up through her 4's but it's still good.
So I'm on the social media and this mom states that her 5 year old just isn't getting the letter sounds. I've seen so many that state that EP is set above grade level and it scares me to see what normal schools are teaching. If you put it out there its amazing what they'll learn and comprehend. If you don't let them explore or look at material that "might" be above them you'll never know what they're really capable of.
I'm not talking about learning disabilities at all. That I get some are years above or below what would normally be expected. But why does a basic 5 year old not know their abc's? That's just odd in my opinion. I know whenever I made a comment I would always get a rather sharp reply to just move up a level if its so easy. But it's not always that simple. I had one person agree with me but most seem to be really struggling and easily offended that everyone else didn't agree with them. I don't think my kids are advanced, my husband seems to think the opposite. When I showed him our 5 year olds numbers writing to 100 his only real comment is that it looks a little sloppy towards the bottom, she needs to work on that. lol
I know it's nothing and really and truly every child is different, every household is different and there is never really an excuse to compare one child to another. I just get frustrated and confused when seeing these desperate mothers shouting out "help my 7 year old can't read at all!" Or the constant "We had to drop them a grade because this is just to hard for them". I just sit back going really??? ok? I don't know, maybe that's just me. I hope they all get what they need and where they need to go.
