Choosing curriculum
One of my goals is to instill a love of learning. With a child who loves to read you'd think that would be easy. Well not so much for this little girl.
My daughter is going into 5th grade and everything seems like a struggle at this point. Honestly it's been worse by far but her mentality right now is get it done to be done. There isn't a whole lot of joy in what she's doing. I know part of that is we're not doing history or science over the summer and when we do something along those lines she doesn't even consider it school work unless I make her fill out a worksheet about it. Her biggest problem is math and anything needed to be written down.
So my confusion and delema begins. I've been doing a mix of ambolside online for it's great reading books and geography/biography ideas and easy peasy (which we often just refer to as Mrs. Lee's class). Last year we did a few abeka books that I had gotten on a large sale (fill your bag for $5) but at the time I didn't know what I was grabbing. So it's really hit and miss what I do have. The thing with those is she really enjoys them. We've done the science and language books and I've thought about getting the history as well. I'm just not sure. Do I want to pick out what I need, pay $250 for the whole shabang or what? The course I'm using now are free except when we choose to buy a reading book.
I will say I don't care for year 3 at least of Easy Peasy's history and I'm not a huge fan of her Bible lessons. They'er just to dry. So will I purchase something? Probably not right now but possibly in the near future. I just got the abeka catalog. What is it about catalogs that do that to a person. Oh well we'll go through it and mark off what we have.
It's enough to make your go crazy but hey it's a learning adventure for all of us :)
After our experience with the hooked on phonics blow out I don't think I'm going to be buying much of anything any time soon. There is so many good resources at our finger tips and through the local library that I just don't see the reasons in it. Well that's my up, down, turn around confusion pitch for ya. There are so many things I think I want but in the end I'm perfectly happy with what we have. As it should be :)
