Instead of Hooked On Phonics
We recently tried the box set of Hooked on Phonics Preschool and Kindergarten. I wasn't impressed and my kids didn’t care for it either but it did help me make up my own curriculum for those grades. Here's what I have for free or dollar store bargain. vs the almost $60 a box.

Phonics workbooks are simple ways to help spelling and writing practice.
Starfall is awesome. You can read the stories on line, click on a word and they help you sound it out. They have phonic games to go with each book and you can print out the book and a worksheet to go with it. This also helps writing.
My daughter seems to grasp starfall stories more because she enjoys them. The HOP books are odd and don’t make much sense.
Dora Easy Readers are just simple books we have on hand but a little harder. Two sentences a page or so a page.
Primer McGuffey and Ray’s Math book are both free on the public domain archive.org.
My Book House is part of a 12 book set of which I am missing 2,3,and 4 and a few others. Number 1 is nursery rhymes which are fun to at any age.
Some of the stories are:
Abraham Lincoln Hiawatha’s childhood
All about Columbus Jack and the Beanstalk
Babe of Bethlehem George Washington and the First American Flag
Boots and his Brothers Story of Tom Thumb
Boyhood of Robert Fulton Thumbelisa
Casey Hones Why the Sea is Salt.
Dick Whittington and His Cat
