Pre-School/Kindergarten Reading/Math

When your first child teaches themselves to read at the age of 4 it's really hard to figure out how to 'teach' reading.  I found myself expecting a lot and ending up with two very frustrated individuals, mainly her and myself.

So I've slowed it down, one step at a time, She'll be 5 this summer and is finally interested in reading and wanting to learn how.  That helps A LOT!!!! lol.  I want the book my oldest used to start reading from but it's no longer available any where I can find so we've done some other things.

We read a lot of paper books together but I also like not having to point to every word and sound everything out with her all the time.  That's when I found Reading Bear, it's not perfect but it does the sounding out and repetitions.  For now it's something that interests her.  Then we'll move on to Star Fall which has online and print out books.  We've done those before and I think she'll really pick up on them when she gets her basics down.

Math is a no brainer for her, kind of like reading was for my oldest.  She can count to 40 or so, add her 0's 1's and some 2's without pictures and can figure anything out with pictures.  So we've turned to ixl.com free sample versions.  It allows 20 practice questions a day.  We don't need that many and it's still fun.  I simply mark which lesson she practice, shapes, patterns, positions, greater/fewer by their code.  She often begs to do more after she has finished.

You may ask why stress so much at such an early age and truth is I'm not.  I'm simply providing the resources, she loves doing them and what really got my rear in gear was the principal aka Daddy.   When my oldest was little we lived in an apartment and all I had to do during the day was focus on her.  3 kids down the road and a home with garden and pets in tow and he's wondering why I'm not putting the same effort out for our next in line.

Sit down lessons in all honesty take 15-30 minutes a day, but I'm an all around learner.  We provide a learning environment.  My oldest is studying snakes right now and loves reading her science books and library books to her sisters.  She's drawing, crafting and playing - so exercising her body and mind all day every day.  Her favorite game and show is Wild Krats all about animals.  I can't keep these kids from learning, it's everywhere!

So what programs have you used? What did you find helpful in the process?  I much rather provide a learning environment where the kids are learning on their own rather than teaching in that sense.
