Jannel's School
Well Freedom day was a lot of fun. We acquired a few new teaching resources and some ideas.
Today we started our day with a renewal of getting ready in a timely manner. I'm not very tolerant of lounging around all day in p.j's and undone hair.
After that was settled we read 2 chapters out of What Your 1st Grader Needs To Know. By Hirsch Jr. The first chapter in Language Arts was just going over some common nursery rhymes, I read some and Jannel read some. She enjoyed it and it went by very quickly. Our next chapter was in geography where we talked about maps. We had a fun discussion about directions and other map elements. That was great because when we went on to our history lesson The World Made New by Aronson and Glenn, we talked about how explorers described details to mapmakers and maps about the world were made. After all that reading we went on to math; got a few new books but I'm not letting her write in them just yet. Instead she gets to copy the problem down in her note book and answer the questions there. It was only 6 problems (one of them adding 4 numbers together, which was a new concept for her) but I think writing the whole problem down will help her remember them. Afterwords she read Disneys rendition of The Enchanted Castle and aced a quiz on it. We're starting a journal process to help with writing, where she needs to write about one thing she has learned each day. It makes for a good reflection. For example yesterday she explained to me how Columbus was trying to get to India when he found us, North America.
We didn't do our bible study today because I can't find our reading schedule. Also we didn't do science, usually I switch off between science and history. Last week we talked about renewable and nonrenewable energy sources. I need to find a more age appropriate lesson plan on what nonrenewable energy sources are, I don't want her to just memorize them but understand what they are about. All in good time.
